Causes of thin and elongated cannabis stems

Causes of thin and elongated cannabis stems

A thin and elongated stem in cannabis is one of the most common problems faced by novice growers. This condition of the plant not only worsens its appearance, but also directly affects its yield and stability. To cope with this problem, it is important to understand its causes and learn how to prevent them.

Why does marijuana have a weak and long stem?

A thin stem in marijuana most often indicates unfavorable growing conditions. The reasons can be very different: from a lack of light to improper watering.

  • Lack of light

Lack of light is the main cause of an elongated and weak marijuana stem. When a plant does not receive enough light, it begins to grow upward in search of a source. This “hunger” leads to the fact that the stem becomes long and thin, and the leaves are located at a considerable distance from each other.

  • Incorrect distance to the lamps

If you are using artificial lighting, it is important to properly adjust the distance between the lamp and the plant. Lamps that are too high do not provide enough light, and those that are too low can overheat the plant.

  • Lack of wind and moving air

A weak marijuana stem can be the result of insufficient air circulation. Under natural conditions, the wind strengthens the stem, making it grow thicker. If the air in the room is stagnant, the stem develops more slowly and remains thin.

  • Excessive watering

Too wet soil can lead to a weakening of the root system, which also affects the condition of the stem. The roots do not have time to develop properly, which makes the plant less stable.

  • Over-saturation or lack of nutrients

Marijuana needs nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium for normal growth. Nitrogen deficiency often leads to weakening of the stems and their elongation. However, an excessive amount of fertilizer can also cause an imbalance.

How to strengthen the marijuana stem?

If your marijuana has a thin stem, it can be fixed. The key is to act quickly and maintain a balance.

  • Provide adequate lighting

For the vegetative stage, it is important to use lamps with a cold light spectrum (4000-6500 K). If the plant has stretched out, try to bring the lamp to a safe distance, usually 30-50 cm depending on the type of lighting.

  • Add air movement

Install a fan in the room with the plants. A gentle flow of air will cause the stem to strengthen, making it thicker and more stable. Do not direct the flow directly at the plant to avoid damage.

  • Control the watering

Give the soil time to dry out between waterings. This stimulates the root system to develop, which will have a positive effect on the overall structure of the plant.

  • Use a support

If the stem is already very elongated, temporarily fix it on a skewer or wooden stick. This will prevent breakage and allow time for recovery.

  • Adjust the nutrition

Use marijuana fertilizers that contain sufficient nitrogen, especially during the growing stage. If the problem is caused by excess nutrients, rinse the soil with water to remove the excess.

How to prevent hemp from pulling?

The best way to deal with a long and thin hemp stem is prevention. Here are some tips:

  • Adjust the lighting. Make sure the plant receives light for at least 18 hours a day during the growing season and 12 hours during flowering.
  • Create the right microclimate. The temperature should be in the range of 22-26 °C, and the humidity should be 50-70% at different stages of growth.
  • Plan the space. Do not thicken the plantings so that each bush receives enough light and air.
  • Apply training techniques. Use LST (low stress training) to distribute light evenly over the plant and avoid stretching the central stem.

To summarize

A thin and long hemp stem is a signal that the growing conditions need to be adjusted. Eliminate the main causes: lack of light, poor air circulation, or improper watering. Regular care and attention to detail will help you grow strong and resilient plants that are ready to yield a rich harvest.
