CheckoutRecall that on June 14, 2022, the Ukrainian government approved a bill on the legalization of medical marijuana in Ukraine.
This bill is considered a real step towards victory in the successful fight against stress, psychological problems and physical ailments (psoriasis, glaucoma, certain types of epilepsy, anorexia) for Ukrainians who experienced serious shocks during the military conflict.
According to the law, the use of medical cannabis is allowed for all people over the age of 18. But the main group that needs drugs more than others is the military.
These are people who have spent a long time in hot spots, and received a serious blow to their psychological and physical health, and are currently experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
PTSD is a serious mental disorder that causes feelings of fear and anxiety. Seizures occur both as a reaction to certain “stimuli” (news, a similar scene from a movie, a trigger item for a specific event), and without them.
Post-traumatic stress disorder in the military, unfortunately, is becoming the norm. It is diagnosed in more than 90% of defenders who have visited regions with active hostilities in Ukraine.
The main symptoms of PTSD:
States, albeit periodic, when the body experiences severe stress, negatively affect overall psychological and physical health.
If no measures are taken, then anxiety attacks and panic attacks become more frequent, headaches, weakness, problems with the cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal tract, and general body tone appear.
In some cases, this psychological disorder leads to irreparable - a person passes away on his own.
PTS is classified as a military injury, as the defender received it as a result of combat operations. They also include shell shock, physical injuries received on the battlefield.
Now you know what diseases are related to military trauma and one of the ways to treat them.
The law on the legalization of marijuana in Ukraine contains three important provisions for patients, businessmen, and doctors.
Patients (military and civilian) are allowed to buy marijuana seeds, store them, cultivate them in premises where created optimal conditions for growing plants. Also, ordinary Ukrainians over the age of 18 can use hemp-based drugs after receiving a prescription from a doctor.
Physicians may prescribe marijuana treatment after diagnosing an illness and making a diagnosis related to a patient's mental health disorders.
Businessmen are allowed to grow medical cannabis on the territory of Ukraine, produce medicines from it and export finished products to other countries.
Each stage of the “work” with cannabis will be under the strict control of the state. To grow cannabis or launch the production of drugs based on it, you need:
This law allows tracking the volume of hemp cultivation and open access to it to those who really need it. This is primarily about the Ukrainian military participating in the armed conflict in 2022. During this time, they experienced severe stress, requiring competent treatment.
Israeli doctors were the first to have experience in treating military marijuana. They prescribed this method to those who experienced shocking military events and were in a state of stress all the time.
After taking hemp-based drugs, the condition of the former military man gradually improved - anxiety and panic, which had a pressing feeling on the whole body, decreased, mood improved, oppressive thoughts were eliminated.
Positive results include a return to a fulfilling life and improved relationships with family and friends.
As noted by doctors, it is difficult for patients to keep their emotions under control during a period of severe stress. They splash them out on their immediate surroundings. And this leads to serious disagreements in the family or among friends.
Now we understand that cannabis treatment for PTSD is not just a whim of officials or the desire of the military to "relax a little", but a necessity due to which the former military will be able to return to normal life.
There are cases when the military took cannabis on their own to reduce the pain of the experience - the horror after seeing terrible pictures, the loss of military friends or serious physical injuries.
The consequences of the war are especially acute for defenders who become disabled - having lost a part of their body, leg, or arm in battle.
For them, medical cannabis for PTSD is a chance to “come out” of the past and adapt to a new reality where conditions for the disabled are not fully thought out:
Also added to this is the skepticism of others towards people with disabilities.
We know the story of a military man who lost his leg in battle and survived 12 operations. In the “new life” he has a prosthesis made of durable material. By the end of the day, it rubs and delivers the strongest discomfort. To reduce pain, the former military took cannabis. His mood improved, physical pain went away.
Nor does he have cravings for stronger drugs. According to the military, he survived a number of operations, and, accordingly, the use of potent drugs that affect the psyche. The military is not going to take them again on his own.
Another reason to take medicinal cannabis is to reduce pain from exercise.
A simple example: if you wear a bulletproof vest that weighs more than 10 kg for more than 4 hours, then your back starts to hurt a lot. Then there are protrusions and hernias. Marijuana is best for pain relief. It eliminates pain, relaxes the body.
This is only a part of the episodes from the life of the military, in which they need additional “support”, since it is not always possible to cope with strong physical or psychological shocks on their own.
As you can see, cannabis treatment for PTSD in Ukraine is a chance for the military to get rid of health problems when some specialists (psychologists, psychoanalysts) are powerless, and return to normal life.
